Gainer's visit Iowa

August 10th we (Stan & Mary Gainer) arrived in Chariton, Iowa at the home of friends, Larry & Jean Wheeldon. The Wheeldon's are also country music fans and enjoy playing guitar and singing. Larry & Jean were gracious enough to allow us to park our camper at their place and leave it there while we went to visit Larry & Carolyn Richeson in Des Moines. Wednesday August 11th we drove north to Larry & Carolyn's home in Des Moines. We arrived at Larry & Carolyn's, I'm embarassed to say, a little late with a "Happy Belated Birthday" card for Carolyn who had celebrated her birthday with her husband, children and grandchildren on the 10th. Marilyn Thompson was there to greet us and Carolyn had prepared a lovely lunch for us.

Carolyn has been going to Weight Watcher's and had prepared everything keeping with the Weight Watcher's program recipes. The food was delicious and I came home with the recipes.

Thursday, August 12, was the first day of the Iowa State Fair and I think the hottest day of the year. We went to the fair at 9:00 am and stayed until the fire works were over and everything closed up.

We saw many of our Texas friends. Leisure World residents Jerry & Joann Weatherman, Larry & Shirley Hayes and of course Marilyn Thompson. We also saw many other Winter Texans. We saw George & Judy Lawrence, who have been LW residents in past years but stayed at Trails End last year.

Winter Texans, Dale Wayman, Ron Muhlenberg, Lois Oleson, Jim Overton, Frieda Ingram and Lola Carson were playing and singing on stage at Pioneer Hall at the fair. Dale & Ron invited me to sing a song with them. Now I can say I have sung on stage at the Iowa State Fair. Pretty exciting for me since I only started singing about four years ago in Texas.

Lots of flooding was going on in the area the night before we arrived at Larry & Carolyn's home. They had received a phone call at 2:30 am telling them to evacuate but they didn't because they are on high ground and knew their house would be safe. Larry drove us around showing us some of the flooded areas. He also took us to the State Capitol building, which is quite impressive. The Veteran's memorials are very pretty and really makes one stop and think about just how many men and women have died throughout history to preserve our freedom. We have a lot to be thankful for. It is sad to think that so many have sacrificed their lives for us and it continues today.

We enjoyed our visit very much and extend a Big Thank You to Larry and Carolyn.

Yvonne's Grand-daughter

Dear Leisure World Friends:
Another message from Yvonne:
I used a message word for word that came from Yvonne's son Randy:

Dear Friends and Family, I have some very heart breaking news, Michaela has lost her battle with cancer and passed away last night (Monday) around 11:00 P.M. Michaela leaves behind her husband Jason, and three beautiful little girls, Madison (6), Megan (4), and Moriah (2). Her battle with cancer has inspired thousands as will her death. Please take a moment today and appreciate the life God has given you, and hug the ones you love, for you never know when they will no longer be with us. Randy Madson-

--also inclosed was this reading which I thought "says it all".

God looked around His garden and He found an empty space,
then He looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful; He only takes the best.
he knew that you were suffering;he knew you were in pain;
He knew you would never get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb,
So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered, "Peace be thine."
It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn't go alone, for part of me went with
you, the day God called you home.

Please keep Yvonne and Jason and his family in your prayers. May they all find comfort in their precious memories of this amazing young woman.

From Yvonne

Yvonne asked me to update everyone on the Blog on Michaela, her grand-daughter, and her progress.

Back in July--after a hospital visit, with fluid on her stomach, Michaela and Jason were told that she would not be getting better. The cancer had returned to ravish her young body. She is getting weaker, rests alot, and is eating not much of anything. They seem to have her pain in control with a pain patche. She continues to have hope, but is slowly realizing that she will not get better or be able to beat this.

Please keep Michaela and Jason, and their girls, Madison, Megan and Moriah in your prayers. Pray that the family finds strength and courage to handle this turn of events ---Pray too for Yvonne , and Yvonne's family and Jason's family. May they continue to feel God's loving arms around Michaela. They are thankful for each and every day.

Eating Out at Logan's

Even the servers were hamming it up when the Leisure World crew decended on Logan's Roadhouse in McAllen  for their Thursday night eat out.Everyone seemed to have a problem deciding what to order. There were so many tempting  choices on the menu.
I don't know about other folks satisfaction with their choices, but I'll swear by the baby back ribs! And you should have seen Carol dig into a massive baked sweet potato.
If the smiles I saw after the meal were any indication, Logan's was a good choice. In two weeks we'll see if Lin's Buffet has an adequate food supply to deal with Leisure World appetites.

Update on Ali

We have been in touch with the care pages concerning Gary and Delores Moen's granddaughter Ali, for the past three months. Poor child has undergone much suffering and pain. At the present time, they are preparing her for a bone marrow transplant in September. It is our understanding that the transplant will help her medical status considerably. The preparation, i.e. heavy chemo and other treatments, has taxed the thirteen year old considerably. Grandma Delores has spent the majority of the summer in Rochester helping her daughter, Karen care for Ali. Gary has also been on the road , working in North Dakota, and traveling to see his family. Please offer your prayers for this entire family. They are undergoing trials that are not only physically painful for Ali, but so emotionally trying for the entire family. God bless them all.

Rita's New Kidney

Dear Friends and family,
This kidney transplant thing is even more than it's cracked up to be!  I easily feel 10 years younger!  Let me take you through my days.
It all started at 4:00 am Tuesday, August 3 Scott and I got up and got ready.  We picked up Jackie at 5:00 am and then headed down to HCMC.  Of course we were early!  But better early than late.  We pressed the button to enter the hospital where we sat and waited for the Day Surgery office to open at 6:00 am.  Of course we were the first ones there so we got right in.  We got changed into our hospital attire and had blood drawn to double check the match.  Everything was great , we were set to go! They gave me something to relax me so I wouldn't really remember what was going on.  It worked like a charm.  I remember being wheeled into the operating room but I never saw a thing.  I don't even remember being moved onto the operating table.  The next thing I know I was in the recovery room and I just woke up.  I wasn't groggy at all, I just sort of popped awake.  I felt great immediately and started chatting away telling everyone that passed me by that I had a new kidney and I felt like a million bucks!  They were all surprised at how cheery I was, but the new kidney was already working and the toxins were being removed from my body already.  The best description I can give is that my whole body felt fresh inside.  I felt like I had gained at least 10 yeas of my life back!  They contacted Scott in the waiting room and said he could meet us in the hall and they would take us to my room.  He heard me chattering all the way down the hall and knew right away that he had the old Rita back!  Yikes, He may need medication himself just to keep up!  We got back in the room and I felt so good  that I called a few family and friends to tell them the good news.  Then the doctors came in to give me an update and tell me that they couldn't believe how well I was doing recovering.  When I went into surgery my creatinine was 7.7 (normal is 0.8 - 1.2) I am now 1.8!!!  My BUN (Blood urea nitrogen) was 100 (normal is about 15) I am down to 41 already.  It's amazing!  They also gave me my camera back that they had graciously taken pictures of the whole event for me.  I have posted them on my facebook page so if you are a friend on facebook go have a look - it's very interesting.  I returned to my room at 3:00 pm and by 8:30 pm I was up walking around.  They didn't think I'd be walking around until at least noon the next day.  By noon the next day I had been out of bed doing at least 3 laps of the unit at least 3 times.  I am well on my way to recovery.  They have taught me all about the medicines I will be taking the rest of my life and how to notice the signs of possible rejection.  There's lots to learn, but they take you through it at a very reasonable speed and make sure I know what I'm suppose to do.  Tomorrow we are making my home pill box up.  When I first go home I will be taking only 20 pills each day and I believe I will eventually be weened down to 11 pills a day, which is one less than I have been taking before the surgery.  I should be going home (to my friend Anita's house for the next 6 weeks) on Saturday.  I can't say thank you enough for all the prayers that I know were sent my way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!  If you'd like to see the pictures I can certainly send them out to each of you that request them.  It is a fascinating procedure.  Thanks again family and friends and especially JACKIE (the real hero in this whole event)!  Everyone please keep in touch.

News from Connie Garrells

Just heard from Connie. She wanted everyone to know she would be away from computer for awhile. Her Mother died last evening. She had a stroke in the early part of the summer, and they had moved her into a nursing home. Her funeral will be Friday, the 6th in
Clay Center ,Nebrasksa. Connie and LeRoy are long time winter residents of Leisure World. I am sure everyone extends their sympathy to the family.

Rita's New Kidney

I received this email from Rita today.
"Dear Friends and family,
Tomorrow is the big day.  By this time tomorrow I should have my new kidney and my body will be on its way back to normalcy.  Thank God for my donor, Jackie Glander,  my daughter-in-law's sister!!!  I know I'll never be able to say thank you enough for the gift she is giving me.  It takes a truly remarkable person to give of themselves in this way.  How many of us have thought we would like to be a donor but have never followed through with the greatest gift?  Jackie has and that puts her in a special category of people in my book.  THANKS A MILLION JACKIE!!!
We go in tomorrow morning at 6:00 am and the surgery starts around 8:00 am.  Jackie first, and then me about a half hour later.  They tell me I should feel like a million bucks right away when I wake up.  I can hardly wait.  I'll email everyone again after the surgery and let you know how it went.  I'm having the doctor take pictures because I'm curious about what it looks like what they're doing to do.  It's all very exciting.  I'll talk to you real soon.
Rita"
