Et was in the Freeport, Illinois hospital about six weeks ago due to some complications she was having. She then was placed in the "Good Sam's" (rehabilitation) in Mt. Carroll, Illinois for about three weeks. She is now home and getting along good with the help of Jim and a friend (Gloria) taking care of her. I'm sure Et would be delighted to hear from friends and acquaintances from Leisure World.

Welcome Dianna Earl to the Leisure World staff. Dianna is now assisting Shirley in the office each morning. She will be greeting you with her warm smile as you check in this Fall. So, welcome back Winter residents, and welcome Dianna as well.

Dining at Casa del Taco

Thursday the 23rd of September saw a rowdy group of Leisure World residents gathered for a communal meal at Casa del Taco in Weslaco. As usual, I forgot my camera, but foxy Fran Foxhoven came to the rescue with her talented cell phone. Here is her documentation of the event.

Vacation to Farmington

I went on the blog yesterday and played catch-up and there is so much depressing news on there, I decided to get on and talk about my vacation to visit our daughter, up in Farmington Minnesota. We were up there from the 8-21(Fox got behind in his yard work)

We had such a great time, but we always do!! She moved into a new home two years ago and I had never seen it. We done all sort of things. Smores, Jessie James days in Northfied, Shopping, Putting up decorations in the yard, for fall, Breakfast at Panera, Spencer Clay County Fair, seen Grandchildren,Visit old neighbors in Spencer, Go for long walks, Godfathers Pizza(MMMMMMMMMMMM), Visited my BrotherRon.

Its all about family and you name it, we done it.....Our son-in-law is a grill master and I tell you, we had so many awesome meals, from the grill,came back a little on the plump side.

I forgot to mention, We also had the Buchers, from Austin Texas, over one night for dinner, they were in Minneapolis on business, now what are those chances.(They are our sons, wifes, parents)

Anyway....What an awesome two weeks...GOD IS GOOD!!!!

Enhancement Fund Promotions

Pat LaFoe sends along a reminder to all who are starting to gather up their goodies to head for South Texas for the winter to keep the special Enhancement Fund activities in mind.
If you haven't already submitted your favorite recipes to one of the ladies collecting the same, put them together and bring them along for inclusion in the Leisure World Cook Book.
There is also a silent auction being planned as an event or as part of an event this winter. Items for auction are solicited. Something representative of your home state, anything that you would like to contribute that someone would want to buy...pack them up and haul them south.  (Maybe someone would like to make a naming grant for the 1,000 gallon grease trap!  See photo.)

Gay and Delores Moen's granddaughter - Ali

As many of you know, The Moen's granddaughter, Ali, has been fighting a heroic battle with cancer. She has been hospitalized in Rochester since May. Her mother, Karen Borgen has been updating on the http://www.carepages.com. Karen is a superb writer. Delores and Gary are also in Rochester, Delores being there most of the summer
Some very good news came last week when she informed her readers that the bone marrow transplant would take place last Friday night. The donor, unknown to them, was a perfect match!! Ali continues to have some bad days, but the family appears to be very optimistic. Please continue your prayers for this brave little girl, and her family. They are a strong,loving family,who bond together, and refuse to give up. God bless them!!!!!

What Storm?

Sorry for the flippant title, Mary Ann, but I just couldn't resist. We received many phone calls from family and friends with the same question you have posed. The answer is basically, What storm?  It blew up in a hurry and was past in a hurry. While we were prepped to get wind and rain with little get ready time, the storm chose to hug the coastline. There was wind damage and heavy rain as far inland as Harlingen, with scattered wind damage in Raymondville and elsewhere in Cameron and Willacy counties. In Weslaco we got little wind and under an inch of rain. We actually received more rain the next day after the storm had moved up to the San Antonio and Dallas/Ft. Worth areas. We are thankfully still healthy and dry in Leisure World. Keep us posted on what's happening in your life.

News from Gordon Bentley via Scott Marriner

Hi Scott,

I dont know if you have heard or not but Nora had to go to a nursing home to stay. She had a bad spell at home and they took her to hospital by ambulance where she had a heart attack and then she had a stroke. She is partially paralized on her left side and is confined to a wheelchair. I visit with her twice a day in the nursing home and they are still adjusting her medication. She has good days and bad days and I hope she will get a bit better soon. They recently moved her to a room closer to the nursing station so they could get to her quicker during the night if she has a bad night. I hope you folks have a far better winter this year than last winter. I sure do miss coming down to see all you folks there in Texas. I have a lot of very nice memories to look back on. I have my snow shovel all ready for the season. You lucky people!  Just me ! Gordon Bentley

Rita's Kidney Walk

Hello friends and family,

I have a HUGE favor to ask of all of you.  On October 9, 2010 Scott and I will be doing the Twin Cities Kidney Walk at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.  I need you to make a small contribution to this cause.  All I am asking is that you make a one dollar donation.  Of course you could donate more, but all I'm asking for is $1.00.  If all my friends do that I will have a sizable sum of money.  I personally will match every dollar donated - so your $1.00 now turns into $2.00. I have joined the Kidneys R Us team from the transplant center at HCMC.  I must say, I have gotten the absolute best care ever from Hennepin County Medical Center.  I feel so well cared for, so safe and so informed about everything that has to do with my transplant.  These are some amazing people!!!  We are raising funds to spread the knowledge about kidney transplants and the need for early detection of kidney disease.  Most of you weren't even aware that I had chronic kidney disease until I emailed all of you asking for a kidney this past March.  That's how kidney disease is - it doesn't make you look sick or even feel sick most of the time until you either need dialysis or a transplant.  I cannot even begin to tell you the difference my kidney transplant has made in my life.  It is amazing, to say the least.  I have gotten my life back!!! And Scott is happy to have his wife back!

Kitchen Enhancement Project Progress

The backhoe dug the hole and a 1000 gallon grease trap was lowered into place.

It seems to be "overkill" in size, but this is the minimum required by the city building code. Once the necessary plumbing connections are completed, and have passed inspection, the tank will be covered and grass replanted.

This is one example of the requirements to bring all facilities in code, grandfathered installations are no longer allowed once the remodelling plans were implemented.Progress sometimes appears to be slow, but it is moving forward.

weather

Beautiful weather. 55 right now but a break from the heat. Changed bedding. Put electric mattress pads back on, flannel sheets. Was supposed to get to 40 last night but don't think it got that cold. Will be up in 80's again next week. Not bad. Was just too hot this summer. Air cond. never shut off some days. Getting ready for Don's birthday. Going to pizza hut. Beats cooking at home. Especially with about 15 people coming. Why do we clean so much for company when you have to clean again when they leave? Three kids can make a mess. And that is why we can send them home again with the parents. right?

We wish to thank the Leisure World Residents for the many cards recieved at the time of Connie's Mother's death. All your kind thoughts and prayers are very appreciated. What great friends we have at Leisure World.

George Ranier's comment to Maxine led to her giving me a copy of this photo taken July 19, 2005.  We've lost a number of our poker players, but an occasional nickel or dime still shows up on the table.

Sun Shine Lady Report

We have some sad news, Harold (Prune) Brotherton passed away last friday. Prayers are with Maryen & family.
Mary Baas was in the hospital for some tests. She is home now.
George Ranier I went over to see how George is doing. He thinks it's going to take along time before he can get out of the Nursing Home. He smashed both of his shoulders, and they couldn't do surgery on them. He seemed to be in good spirits when I was there. He does miss not playing poker with the guys.
Went over to another Nursing Home to see Thea Soland. Went to her room but she was sleeping I didn't have the heart to wake her up. She seem to be doing okay.
Marge McDermott I know they're alot of Leisure World residents that knew Marge. Well she passed away August 17th. She was the first resident over at the new Nursing Home next door to us.
